She moves into range and takes aim. While Peeta goes to check on the girl, the Career Tributes talk about killing. Katniss wonders what it would be like to live in such a place. Peeta is dressed identically, in a black jump suite and flaming head dress and cape, as they ride a golden chariot pulled by black horses, down the streets of the capital. She realizes that someone is building a fire, an extremely stupid mistake that soon attracts the Career tributes, who she sees have formed an alliance, not uncommon for the early stages of the games. Clove teases Katniss, asking her where her boyfriend Peeta is. They have won the Games, but the Gamemakers rescind the rule about dual victors. She also found out Peeta's mother told him she expected Katniss to win the Games, not him. The next morning, she is brought up to a hovercraft on the roof, where she is implanted via syringe with a tracking device so the Gamekeepers can keep her story televised.
The capitol is where the wealthy and ruling power reside. She plans on killing Katniss, but makes the mistake of mentioning that they killed Rue. The girl and her friend, a young man, were seen in the forest by Katniss and Gale. Rue and Katniss finish their plan by lunch and are ready to carry it out soon after. Which includes a lot of waxing on their part. Katniss remembers then that Peeta is trying to kill her.
Her choice is either to fight for provisions stored in a Cornucopia or start running for the tree line. The Hunger Games have begun. It also reveals how kindness, love and manipulation significantly affect our lives. Before Katniss leaves the area, she checks her snare traps and finds one rabbit. In the end of the chapter, Peeta admits to being in l … ove with Katniss on camera.
Before Cato can reach her, Thresh slams a rock onto her head. Katniss is shocked by the news that Peeta would join up with the Careers. She files this bit of information away in her mind, to remind herself all he says to her may not be true. She sleeps in trees and hunts game. By trying to cheat the system with the berries, she's seen as rebelling, and other districts have started to rebel in her name.
Katniss thinks for a while before deciding that the area around the supplies is a minefield.
