Cotton Candy On A Rainy Day

I'm still working through this book as I don't read poetry books in order, rather I pick them up and turn to a page and read what inspires me. As a witness to three generations, Nikki Giovanni has perceptively and poetically recorded her observations of both the outside world and the gentle yet enigmatic territory of the self. If it could be said she was was a truth teller in her earlier books, here she sometimes slips into the advice giver or affirmer of bromides , thankfully not of the syrupy sort but the tendency results in some weak poetry. What made me not like it as much was the fact that some of the poems were a little long and I sorta got tired of them fast. That said, Giovanni is still a master of words and imagery, and I would highly recommend anything she writes, this book included. When the course gets clear, one team will move along while the other one stays.

I don't actually read a lot of poetry, so it was kind of different in a good way. That said, Giovanni is still a master of words and imagery, I really enjoy Nikki Giovanni's poems, generally, but sadly this collection didn't quite make it for me. Pink covers with black lettering. The verse says that unlike life, the feeling of loneliness does not persist. You would think that would speak to the millennial point of view, but I think, as evidenced by Lovelace and Gill, that it's a little more hopeful than that, and this particular collection felt a little too dark for me.

She dips into the maudlin at times but only briefly. When her poems first emerged from the Black Rights Movement in the late 1960s, she immediately became a celebrated and controversial poet of the era. It's a very 1970s collection, in that it's very disillusioned and conscious of the cracks and failures of the world. This is because most of the emotions we feel are also felt by others. Cotton Candy On A Rainy Day Poem by Nikki Giovanni

I had to read the poetry more than once to understand it in some cases, but it was good that way because it made you want to read it more than once. And for the centuries that followed, they have voiced out their appeal for the recognition of their rights. It's a very 1970s collection, in that it's very disillusioned and conscious of the cracks and failures of the world. She can slice and dice the world, turn on a dime, and become playful, raise the roof up to the sky, and dig down deep to what we turn away from. But when you think a little about it, you get the sense in which Giovanni meant it. It's not a depressing book but I would hardly call it uplifting. Brilliant, striking, illuminating, she has it all.

It gives importance to examining oneself before one could try to understand the world outside. When her poems first emerged from the Black Rights Movement in the late 1960s, she immediately became a celebrated and controversial poet of the era. These events have had inspired Giovanni in writing the poem. It was cool to read and reflect on certain parts of human conditions. Moving from the emotionally fraught political arena to the intimate realm of the personal, the poems in this volume express a conflicted consciousness and the disillusionment shared by so many during the early 1970s, when the dreams of the Civil Rights era seemed to have evaporated.

Just like a cotton candy on a rainy day, life should be lived despite obstructions. How many more demonstrations and generations are needed before this will be realized? I don't actually read a lot of poetry, so it was kind of different in a good way. A pivotal work in Nikki Giovanni's career, Cotton Candy on a Rainy Day is one of the most poignant and introspective of all Giovanni's collections. The impression is of an extremely competent woman feeling her way through life's obstacle course and in this particular volume of poetry, largely expressing her regrets and disappointments. She was editor of Fisk University's literary magazine. Her poems are undeniably authentic distillations of black life in America.

She dips into the maudlin at times but only briefly. One of her earliest influences was her grandmother who infused to her how vital individual action is to initiate change whether it results to either losing or winning. A pivotal work in Nikki Giovanni's career, Cotton Candy on a Rainy Day is one of the most poignant and introspective of all Giovanni's collections. Although I gave it three stars for the fact that the sentences and pages were structured well together and the writing was really good, I just would have wanted more excitement and action in the poems. She has a hard edge and her truth-telling extends to herself.
