Gregor discontinues his job as a traveling salesman cutting off all financial support to his family and spends all his time alone in his room, only occasionally being serviced by his younger sister, Grete, who accepts the heavy burden of providing for the family. Finally, he manages to crawl back painfully to his room and his sister slams the door shut behind him and locks it. Discovering Gregor's new pastime, Grete decides to remove some of the furniture to give Gregor more space.
When Gregor attempts to turn around, Grete panics. . They often discuss the difficult financial situation they find themselves in now that Gregor can't provide them any help. But, this would not last for long much longer. Samsa insists that the lodgers leave, they quickly give up and depart. After the metamorphosis, he is forced to return to work in order to support the family financially.
They decide to move to a smaller apartment to further save money, an act they were unable to carry out in Gregor's presence. Even when the door is left open, he often simply ignores it. She did not care if the bug was her brother, she only thought that the bug was bothering her and she wanted to get rid of it. When he first gets out of his bed after waking, for instance, he tries to stand upright, even though his body is not suited to being upright.
